MPC Success Stories
Meet some of the animals that generous support of
the Malibu Pet Companions has helped over the years.
Harry the Chi
Harry came to the shelter as a stray and arrived without fur -- completely bald! MPC funded the vet visit where a skin-scrape indicated demodectic mange (an immune system mange). Dr. Dana at Malibu Coast Animal Hospital recommended we start him on special baths, antibiotics, Ivermectin, specialized food, and Missing Link. A sweet little man, he was just starting to grow in a bit of "peach fuzz" when he was adopted by a lovely woman who fell in love with this bald, happy guy. She recently brought Harry back to the shelter for a visit, and Harry has almost a full head and body of fur!
Henry
Hi my name is Henry! I'm a very handsome buff-colored medium-haired cat. My owners brought me in for euthanasia because I had a history of urinary blockages. Despite my age, my days were numbered. Joyce from MPC took me to the vet, where they kept me for several days and cleared up the blockage. I was put on medicine for a couple of weeks and will be on special CD food for the rest of my life. I feel like a new cat -- no more problems as long as I continue the regimen.
Honey Bee
There's no place like home says Honey Bee... Honey Bee was fostered after her non-cancerous tumor removal surgery. Honey Bee was such a good houseguest that her foster brought her to the dog-friendly set of the play "Wicked" with her while she worked. The cast and crew were all enamored with her and Glenda and Elphaba insisted on posing for pictures! Honey Bee's foster reports that she is a wonderful dog that yearns to have her own person so she can look lovingly at them while lounging. She is housebroken and gets along wonderfully with other dogs.
Update: Honey Bee has been adopted into a loving home where she can lounge and love to her heart’s content!
Jenna
Jenna is a 10 year young love of a pup that was turned in by her family because they moved. MPC paid for Jenna to have a complete exam at which time it was determined that besides a flea allergy and malnutrition, she is in good health and looks closer to 8 years old. Jenna gets along with other dogs and has a happy-go-lucky personality.
Update: Jenna has a new mommy to call her own and she now enjoys daily walks and has made many new friends.
Jill
Hi, my name is Jill! I was lucky enough to be transferred to the Agoura Shelter with my brother Jack, where we both arrived in pretty bad shape, emaciated and very scared. Even worse, I had a cherry-eye that needed to be repaired. We started in foster care with Gail, a loving county staff person, who figured out what my brother and I could handle on our sensitive stomachs: chicken at first, and then some special duck and potato food that MPC bought for us. Once we were well on our way to gaining weight and trusting people again, we came back to the shelter where the volunteers continued to give us lots of TLC. I had that cherry-eye fixed and now, don't I look gorgeous?

Lenny
Lenny came to us from another shelter after one of our volunteers discovered him in his cage in such a state of emaciation he could barely lift his head - but he could still manage to wag his tail! We knew this pup was in danger of euthanasia and immediately made the decision to take him on as a MPC dog.
As soon as Lenny arrived at the shelter, he was taken to the vet, where diagnostic testing discovered his Irritable Bowl Syndrome; Lenny would need special food and medication for the rest of his life, given at every meal in order to maintain his nutrition. A dog with a lifelong medical condition can be difficult to find a home for, but a wonderful family decided to adopt Lenny despite his ongoing issues.
You may think Lenny is the lucky one, but it turns out that he was just what this family needed: the father of Lenny's new family had recently been diagnosed with cardiac failure at the age of 48, and Lenny gave him a reason to get out of bed every morning. Dog and man now have a positive and healthful daily routine. Lenny has also become a regular soccer player with the family's daughter and makes their younger son feel safe. Lenny's new family are thankful to MPC for saving this wonderful animal, and cannot imagine their lives without him!
Lil' Bit
Hi I'm Lil' Bit. I came to the shelter and my paperwork indicated I had some medical issues. The nice folks at MPC wanted to make sure I was healthy so they took me to a private vet. It was a long drive for me. The vet examined me and poked me with a needle. Ouch! It hurt a bit but the good news is they said I am a healthy young cat. I was a good patient too. I am currently at the shelter and would love to get into a house where I can have room to run in. I'm not overly active and I do like some time to myself. Please come by the shelter to visit me and the other nice cats here.

Lindy
Lindy arrived at the Agoura Shelter with a severely abscessed tooth that caused the side of her face to be swollen. She was taken to a pet emergency facility for initial treatment. MPC then took her to a private vet for follow-up. The private vet recommended a course of antibiotics and removed fatty tumors on the side of her face and torso. Now that Lindy is feeling much better she has blossomed into a charming and happy little dog. She has been to two adoption events where she displayed her easy going personality while lounging on a folding chair for most of the day. She walks very nicely on a leash, rides well in the car and gets along with other dogs. Lindy desperately needs a person to call her own.
UPDATE: Adopted!! By a wonderful family! She will keep mom company in her home office while she works!
Little Kitty
I am Little Kitty a black and white short hair cat. I was turned in by my owners saying I peed around the house with blood in urine. The MPC volunteers were very concerned. They said that often indicates infection. I was tested and they said I was healthy. I do remember feeling ill and it burned to pee. I am a clean cat otherwise my pretty white fur would get stained so I take pride in keeping my surroundings clean. When I get nervous like when I go to the vet, I will pee in my carrier but that I can't help. Cars are scary for us cats. I am a very sweet cat but my name is a bit of misnomer. I was weighed at the vets when I first arrived at the shelter and I weighed a little over 15 pounds. I was told that is big for a cat. You can tell me apart from the other black and white cats because I have a black face splotch. Do you have room in your home for a gentle giant like me? Update: Although I was adopted, it unfortunately was short term only. I developed a skin sore. The lady was told it was ringworm and returned me. MPC stepped in again and I went on a car ride to Malibu Coast Animal Clinic. I stayed with them overnight. They looked at my skin and determined it wasn't ringworm. So I have been cleared as a healthy cat again. Now if I can just find a forever home and this time please keep me. It is difficult to get my hopes up that I am finally safe and then come back to a cage again.
Update: Little Kitty was adopted by someone who wanted a companion for her cat and herself.
Lucky
My name is Lucky. I am a 5 year old male brown tabby cat. Some people refer to me as a tiger striped cat. My owners turned me in saying I had litter box issues. Please continue to read there is more to the story. MPC volunteers brought me in to a private vet MCAH to be examed and for a urinalysis (UA). They suggest an UA to rule out medical causes whenever a litterbox issue exists. The results of the UA were normal. The volunteer received more info and it turns out I was using the litter box but some waste fell over the sides of the box. I am a big kitty and so I can't fit into a little litterbox.The volunteer suggest a medium to large litterbox with a cover to resolve the issue of things not falling into the litterbox. I will carry on a nice conversation with you and am very gentle.

Maggie
Maggie, who was actually named Girl by her former owners, is an 18 year old active Chihuahua. MPC took her to see a private vet who discovered she had two bladder stones and is in need of a teeth cleaning, which MPC will arrange to have done. Her blood work is fine and she will soon be ready for her forever home.
Update: Maggie was spotted at the Best Friend’s Adoption Festival by Molly’s Mutts & Meows and is in foster care with a family that has a Maggie look-alike.

Maisy
Maisy was transferred to the Agoura Animal Shelter from one of our other shelters. She had been hit by a car and needed surgery to repair the damage. Our other shelters do not have a nonprofit medical fund, and she was in danger of euthanasia. When she arrived at the Agoura Animal Shelter Maisy received the surgery she needed thanks to the MPC, and was adopted to a wonderful family who had just lost their lab to old age.
Merry
Hi, my name is Merry! I arrived as a stray at the shelter with my pal, Papa Joe. I looked a little plump so everyone thought I must be pregnant, and sure enough, the ultrasound (funded by MPC) showed four puppies. Despite my slight roundness, I had not been well taken care of, so MPC bought me some very rich, special food to give me some good prenatal nutrition before my pups arrived. Just a few weeks later in foster care, I whelped not four puppies but nine!

Meow Meow
Hi, Meow Meow is my name. I am a white and tabby 5 to 6 years old. I am actually a quiet kitty despite my name. I do get meowy in the car but that is typical for us cats. Shortly after I arrived at the shelter, the staff and volunteers were concerned about me. They noticed I went to my litter box a lot. I tried to pee but not much would come out. It was uncomfortable for me. The vet examined me and said I was a very nice cat and looked healthy. MCAH kept me overnight to observe me and run a urine test. The urine test was normal but they noticed some blood in the urine. The vets sent me back to the shelter with some medication to calm my bladder. I am starting to feel more comfortable. When I was taken back to the vet for a re-check because I was still going to the litter box frequently, they ran further tests and did surgery. When I woke up, I felt like a new cat because it no longer hurt to pee. They said I had something called bladder stones and that I need special food to make sure the stones don't come back. The food doesn't cost much and I will even share it with other cats. As long as I get my special food, I shouldn't need additional care.

Misha
Misha is a sweet little kitty who came to the shelter as a stray with a droopy eye lid. The vet at Malibu Coast Animal Hospital said Misha would have to wait until he was a little bigger to have surgery to correct the problem. While Misha was at the shelter "getting bigger" one of the volunteers liked Misha and decided to foster him until he was big enough for his eye surgery and neuter. When it was time, Misha returned to Malibu Coast and now has a normal eyelid. The volunteer decided to adopt Misha and will be taking him on his first vacation to Oregon.
Molly
When Molly was brought to the shelter as a stray, she was dirty, severely matted, dehydrated, and had a tumor on her right foot that, after a visit to the vet, was determined to be cancer. MPC funded the surgery to remove a portion of her paw, and the hospital staff shaved and cleaned her up. She recovered quickly and was recently adopted by a family whose elderly mother wanted a lap cat. This 17-pound friendly girl ended up with a very happy future and a second chance thanks to MPC!
Molly
Molly is a young dachshund who was pregnant when her owner brought her to the shelter. Molly had her litter while living with a foster family, but became very ill while nursing her puppies. Realizing Molly was in distress, her foster rushed her to the veterinarian, where it was found that Molly had become dangerously dehydrated from nursing her puppies and was near death! The vet was able to save Molly and bring her back to good health. MPC funded the emergency veterinary visit and her follow up care and since then, Molly and all of her puppies have been adopted!
Orangie
Orangie, a 6 year old white with orange cat, was dropped off at the shelter with his 2 cat housemates, Blackie and Whitey, and his house mate dog, a big Shepherd. Their human could no longer afford her pets due to a personal economic change and a residential move. It was a very sad day for the boys. Orangie's owner suspected he had some tooth trouble but didn't get him checked out by a vet. MPC brought Orangie to the vet and he stayed over for a dental cleaning. Orangie said he felt sleepy but woke up with "new" teeth. They are now shiny and white. He shares his space with Blacky and Whitey, both age 4 years. They get along with other cats and should be ok with dogs. They did get a mild cat cold but that should only be a temporary issue. Please visit the shelter to meet these handsome big boys.
Update: Orangie went to a home along with her housemate Whitey. Both are happy to have the company of each other. They were happy to know that Blackie, their other housemate, found another home soon after. All 3 are doing well in their new homes.
Ozzy
Hi, my name is Ozzy! I became an MPC dog when I arrived at the shelter with a broken toe - they say that I went out a second-story window, so I guess I'm pretty lucky! As you can see from my picture, I was in a cast for about 8 weeks while my paw healed, and a wonderful MPC/Shelter volunteer named Karla took me to the vet every two weeks to have my cast changed. I've had it off for a little while now, and that toe is feeling pretty good!
Ozzy was adopted to a fun family with two teenage kids who love this affectionate ball dog!
Pandora
Pandora was adopted by a very kind lady who initially wanted another cat that was not available. After she was introduced to Pandora she knew it was a perfect match. Pandora loved the lady's attention and off Pandora went to her new home. Sometimes it pays to wait for Ms. Right to come along.
Patches
Patches came into the shelter with his girlfriend China Girl when their owner became too ill to care for them. While at the shelter their owner passed away. Patches had a very tough time adjusting to shelter life and broke his tooth on his kennel cage. MPC funded the treatment needed to repair the tooth and to clear up the related infection. Patches was recently adopted into a family with a little girl that just adores her big patchy dog! (China was also adopted!)
Patches & Zammies
I'm Patches a black and white patched cat. Some people call my pattern a cow pattern. My cousin Zammie and I were turned in after our owner got very sick and went into hospice care. It was a very sad day for us all. My family said I had chronic drippy eye when I was turned in. Yasmin, a staff kennel attendant, was worried I might be sick and asked MPC to please let me see a vet. The vet ran a test (a URI culture) and said I could use some medicine to get rid of a virus. After about a week, I was cured of the virus. I still have a weepy eye but that is just how I am. I heard a volunteer say that often cats with white on face and near eyes get teary eyes. So now I am ready to get adopted. I am glad to have my buddy Zammie here to keep me comfortable. I groom him and he sleeps snuggled next to me. We even sleep together paws entwined.
Patsy Cline
My owner had to be placed in a nursing home and her family took me in short-term, but couldn't keep me because they were allergic to cats. When I was turned in they thought I was walking funny and suspected I had a hurt leg. MPC paid for me to go to see the doctors at Malibu Coast Animal Hospital for an exam. The nice lady doctor wanted me to stay overnight to observe me. They said I had a bit of a cat cold but my hurt leg wasn't anything. The leg thing was just a funny waddle I do because I could afford to drop a few pounds. My owner loved me too much and well... I ate too much and now weigh about 20 pounds. I have been treated for my cat cold. I will always remember my first owner but am ready for another home. The doctors suggest a weight reducing diet. Drat no more treats!
Patsy Cline went home to a young lady who liked her personality after she saw her putting on a show by rolling in her cage. Patsy is now in a good home.
Phil
Phil was transferred from one of the other shelters after the volunteers fell in love with him and thought his chances for adoption were much better at the Agoura Shelter. Phil continued to steal hearts while at Agoura. MPC arranged for Phil to be examined and treated for a bacterial skin infection and eye condition. Happily, Phil has been adopted into a happy home where he’ll share a bed with his new mom and fur brother.
Phoebe
Phoebe was transferred in from one of our other shelters on a Tuesday. A darling puppy she appeared to be healthy and we prepared to get her quickly out the door into a home. By Thursday she was deteriorating and rushed to the vet where she was diagnosed with Parvo. After a long week of intense treatment funded by MPC she eventually recovered into a perfectly healthy pup. She is an active girl who is good with other dogs and very affectionate. She has found a family who will exercise and love her "furever"!
Pua
I'm Pua, a Hawaiian name meaning flower. I am a long hair gray cat. My photo looks black so you really need to meet in person to see my beautiful colored coat. I was turned in because they thought I had health issues and either couldn't afford to care for me or didn't want to go to the expense. MPC brought me to Malibu Coast Animal Clinic and they poked be and examined me. My health issues were nothing that required any medication. A mild heart murmur that has no affect on my ability to move around nor will it shorten my life. I did need my teeth cleaned and some pulled but now I have fresh breath and white teeth. Recently I went back to the vet because my eye was bothering me. I am currently on eye drops but that is just a temporary condition. I am expected to be better than new.
Update: Pua stayed at the shelter for a few months. Her previous owner had to move out of state and didn't have a place to live yet. She must have missed Pua deeply because they came back for her. The lady's daughter drove all the way back from Las Vegas when she noticed that Pua was still waiting for her forever home. Pua and family are reunited and were very happy to see one another.
