MPC Success Stories
Meet some of the animals that generous support of
the Malibu Pet Companions has helped over the years.
Rasta
When Rasta arrived at the shelter she was so badly matted and had so many dreadlocks that she was named "Rasta". Rasta's eye was so badly infected that the vets thought it might need to be removed, but they were able to save it despite its poor condition. In spite of the obvious neglect this little girl has suffered, she is a very sweet and engaging little gal who enjoys the company of other pups as well as people. She badly needs a lap to sit on after all she's been through. Will you make everything "Irie" for Rasta?
Update: Rasta was spotted at the Best Friend’s Adoption Festival by Molly’s Mutts & Meows and is in foster care with a loving family.
UPDATE: Adopted!
Roberta
Hi my name is Roberta. Most people wouldn't think that a sick and aging cat was particularly lucky to end up in a shelter, but in my case it was the best thing that ever happened! I arrived at the shelter in really bad shape - I was lethargic, weak, and raw from severe diarrhea, and my fur was a mess. The wonderful volunteers with MPC took me immediately to the vet where it was found that I was suffering from hyperthyroid. I was put on medication, and within a few weeks I was on my way to becoming a gorgeous and healthy gal again. My luck continued when a nice lady saw me at the shelter and asked to hold me - I just felt so comfortable I fell right to sleep in her arms. I left with her that very day and am so happy to have a warm and loving home to call my own!
Rusty
I'm Rusty! My owners brought me in for euthanasia. MPC took me to the vets to determine what was wrong since I didn't look bad and I wasn't in pain. They examined the vet notes from my previous vet and the MCAH ran some tests. They determined that I had a sensitive stomach and gave me some medication and special food. With time I can probably be weaned off the medication and the special diet will take care of my sensitive stomach. The prescription food doesn't cost any more than premium brand of food from the pet store. Siamese cats are prone to stomach and food sensitivity. My symptoms cleared up and I am now on public display.
Rusty's new owner came in looking for a senior kitty that needed a good home. She spent a long time deciding because she wanted to make sure she chose the cat that was right for her. Once she was certain she understood Rusty's needs, she was able to make the commitment. Rusty responded to her and soon after their meeting went home. Rusty is lucky to have found someone with a big heart to take in such a special boy.
Sammy & Hermione
Sammy & Hermoine are a closely bonded pair turned in by their owners. Sammy's eye did not appear normal when he arrived at the shelter so MPC funded Sammy's vet visit vet, where he was diagnosed with dry-eye (for which drops were recommended), as well as having one eyelid that is partially missing, and developing growths. Dr. Lisa and Dr. Victor at Malibu Coast Animal Hospital recommended a surgical specialist, who fell in love with Sammy at first sight, and offered to treat him free of cost! Sammy recovered beautifully from the surgery, and now these cats (who slept with paws entwined) were adopted together.
Sara
Sara came to us from another shelter. A large tumor was discovered on her belly. MPC funded the surgery needed for the tumor removal giving our portly girl a new and slimmer physique. Her health since the removal of the non cancerous tumor has been good and our spunky, butt-wiggling, lovable gal is ready to find her forever home.
UPDATE: Adopted!
Shadow
Shadow was transferred in from another shelter and arrived in very bad shape. He was emaciated, very frightened, with a back end that sloped downward. He also had massive diarrhea. A vet exam determined there was nothing wrong with his back end and in fact with daily exercise and time out of his kennel cage his back end unfolded to almost normal in appearance. (We surmise he had spent so much extended time with out exercise in a kennel cage at the other shelter that perhaps his back end had atrophied) With lots of TLC from the volunteers, medication, and special food and supplements funded by MPC, Shadow has turned into a magnificent and handsome pup. A goofy lovable guy, he was adored by all the volunteers and has found a wonderful home!
Slappy & Lucinda
Our names are Slappy and Lucinda and we found our forever home. We were in foster care for a longer than usual period because Lucinda developed a fungal skin condition called ringworm. They say it is similar to athlete’s foot. MPC brought us to Malibu Coast Animal Hospital and they prescribed some medication. My foster applied it twice a day but our fur didn't grow back as quickly as they hoped. We were always active and playful but just had some bald spots. MCAH suggested another medicine that was oral and worked well for fungus. We were given the medication daily. It tasted like chicken so we didn't mind taking it. Our fur grew back and on the first day at the shelter we got adopted. A lady came to look at us. Her family was grieving over a loss in the family. Her son needed something to love. They picked us. We love to play with the boy and his dog. We had lived with a dog in our foster home so the adjustment was easy. We think dog tails are fun to play with. It is so nice to have someone to love us and care for us.
Smokey
Hi, my name is Smokey! I came to the shelter after being on the run for over a month, and by the time I arrived I was frightened, emaciated, and had patchy fur from a bad skin condition. MPC got me to the vet right away and found out I had a flea allergy, which was treated with special baths, Frontline, and antibiotics. MPC bought me some special food and Missing Link - a food supplement designed to help bring fur back. As you can see from my picture, I'm looking oh, so handsome! Working with the friendly shelter volunteers and staff I grew comfortable around people, and ready for my forever home.
Happily Smokey was adopted to a gentleman whose senior rottie had just passed away. Smokey's new guardian is so happy to have Smokey as a part of his family!
Snowflake
Hi, my name is Snowflake! My owners turned me into the shelter to be euthanized because I was vomiting and they were unable to cope with the special diet I needed. Thankfully the nice volunteers with MPC intervened, took me to the vet, and voila - a little medicine and a special diet, and I am good as new! I was recently adopted and am living happily ever after.
Stuart
Stuart was turned in to the shelter by a neighbor who grew concerned for his safety when she saw that he was not allowed in his house, and was roaming the neighborhood. His owners did not come to claim him from the shelter, but another neighbor felt sorry for Stuart and adopted him. Unfortunately, after only a couple of days, Stuart became very sick and was returned to the shelter.
He was taken to a private vet where he was diagnosed with Parvo (it's likely he had never been vaccinated and so was vulnerable to such diseases). He fought for his life for eleven days in the hospital and now, with the care MPC provided and the love of a good foster home, Stuart is happy and healthy. After several weeks recovering in foster care, Stuart was officially adopted by his foster family. He knows what it's like to be loved and living indoors with a family, and instead of sleeping under cars, he now loves going for rides.
Taz
Taz was turned into the shelter by his owner because "his breath smells bad and he needs a dental". Taz was also so underweight that his ribs were showing and his waist was tiny. MPC took Taz to a private vet where it was determined that his teeth were so bad that it was painful for him to eat. The Vet removed two of his teeth and he is now in foster care with a healthy appetite and a growing waist! Taz’s foster family has taught him to use the doggy door so he is completely housebroken and gets along very well with dogs of all sizes. He comes when his name is called and stays right by his person. He is also very affectionate and leans into you when being petted.
UPDATE: Adopted by his foster family!
Tiger
Hi, my name is Tiger. I became an MPC dog when I started to have massive stomach troubles. The MPC got me tested (I had giardia - yuck!), and with antibiotic treatment funded by MPC, I recovered quickly.
Tiger was adopted to a young man and his family who fell in love with his personality and beautiful stripes!
Toby
Toby is a happy-go-lucky young pup that came to the shelter as a stray. He had entropian in both eyes (eyelids rolled in) which MPC paid to have corrected by a private vet. Toby now looks bright eyed and bushy tailed and is ready to be adopted into a home looking for a sweet and active pup!
UPDATE: Adopted!
Tommy
Tommy "the Tummy" is a big, gray tabby boy who weights about 26 pounds. Yes, that is overweight BUT he is on a diet. His owners could no longer care for him and were sad to have to give him up. MPC took Tommy to the vet for an exam since he was a bit -- correction -- a lot bigger than the average cat. Happily we discovered though that other than his weight issue, he is basically a healthy cat. Tommy is a nice boy that doesn't seem to mind being on a low calorie diet since he seems to like all types of food. You can find him waddling around the habitat for cats at the shelter. With winter around the corner, you wouldn't have a need for a blanket since Tommy would be more than happy to be your personal big cat blanket to sleep with. He likes other cats and is good with kids.
UPDATE: Adopted!
Twinkie
Hi, my name is Twinkie! When I arrived at the shelter as a stray I was in a much neglected state, with nails so long I could barely walk. As soon as I was off stray status, MPC paid for me to see a private vet, who diagnosed me with a bacterial skin infection and chronic ear infection. I then went into foster care where was started on a course of antibiotics and medicated baths. I now look and smell much better, plus I'm more alert.
